Emergency dentist services may be needed at all hours of the day and night. It can be difficult to find an emergency dentist who will see you in time to avoid permanent damage to your teeth and gums. Here are some suggestions that you may consider while waiting to see the dentist. Following are a few examples of potential dental emergencies that may sometimes occur.

An abscess may cause severe pain. It could also be accompanied by swelling or fever. An abscess can become very serious if it is not treated promptly. Sometimes the infection can spread to other parts of the body. Contact your emergency dentist as soon as possible. In the meantime, it may be helpful to rinse your mouth with warm salt water.

Broken or Missing Tooth

If you find the tooth or pieces of the tooth that broke off, be sure to save them. The dentist may be able to secure them back in place. Attempt to not touch or handle the tooth anymore than needed. Rinse them with plain water and place them in a cup of milk until you can get to the dentist. Arrest any bleeding with gauze . If you can get to the dentist within one hour, the chances of saving the tooth are much higher. This procedure typically will only be effective with children’s teeth that have been avulsed, or “knocked out” of the oral cavity.

Lost Crown or Filling

When you lose the protective material that was preventing further tooth decay, it is imperative to replace it quickly. If you cannot see a dentist, use caution when eating or drinking liquids. You may also try to put the crown back in place if you cannot get to an emergency dentist. Seek dental care as soon as possible to have a dentist check it out.

Toothaches may have many causes. Among others, it could be a cavity, an injury, an ulcer, or sinus issues. Many problems associated with toothaches should be treated quickly to avoid permanent damage. Rinse your mouth with plain water and floss to remove any food particles that could be causing further irritation. While you can take any pain medication, such as Aspirin, that is recommended by your medical doctor, you should never put the medicine directly on the tooth. This can cause further damage. The most important thing is to call the dentist as soon as you can.

When an injury occurs to the gum, lip, cheek, or tongue that causes bleeding, hold a cold compress on the area for about 10 minutes. If you cannot get the bleeding to stop, you may need to make a trip to the emergency room. Even after you have been treated, you should also see about emergency dental care. The dentist can determine if everything is healing properly. They can also make sure there were no other areas affected by the incident that caused injury.

When you have braces, there is sometimes the possibility that the hardware will loosen or break. This can cause injury to your soft tissue or damage to your teeth. Use orthodontic wax to keep the wires and brackets from scraping against tissue or teeth. Make an appointment to see your orthodontist to correct the hardware. See your dentist if any injury occurred.

Remember that oral health affects your overall health as well. Don’t neglect these emergency dental situations. If you have any questions or concerns, contact and allow Dr. Miller to evaluate the problem.
