Additional Benefits of braces beyond just a pretty smile. Braces can lead to a much more healthy mouth.Braces are used to straighten the teeth for proper alignment. Although the benefits of braces include a more attractive smile, there are many other, more functional benefits to having braces.

More than Just Aesthetic

Braces serve more than just cosmetic purposes of teeth straightening. They are used to promote proper teeth alignment which can help with proper bite, decreased risk of cavities and gum disease, reduced teeth grinding, and reduction in occurrence of jaw related issues.

Keeping it Clean

Crooked and crowded teeth are much more difficult to clean in a proper and thorough manner. No matter how thorough your attempts are at brushing and flossing, it is difficult to reach the entire surface of each tooth if they are twisted or turned due to crowding. This inability to effectively clean the teeth can lead to cavities, gum disease, and potentially periodontal disease, which can erode the tooth socket and bone in the jaw.

Chewing it over…or Preferably Not

Proper teeth alignment can affect speech, chewing, and teeth grinding. When teeth are not aligned properly, this affects what is called the bite, or the way the teeth fit together when the jaw is closed. You may not be able to say all words or sounds effectively. Chewing may be affected which can lead to larger pieces of food reaching the digestive tract, thus affecting digestion. Also, bruxism, or teeth grinding is more likely to occur when the teeth do not fit together properly.

Crowded Teeth Are a Pain in the…Head?

When crooked or crowded teeth lead to an improper bite, this can lead to frequent headaches. These headaches may be caused by teeth grinding, or they may be caused by problems with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). TMJ dysfunction can occur when improper bite forces the joint out of alignment. This can result in jaw popping or locking, as well as frequent headaches.

Other Issues…There’s More

Crooked or crowded teeth might make it difficult or even impossible for some types of future dental work. For example, crowns and bridges may not be able to be used until after some form of teeth straightening has occurred. Also, when teeth are crowded or crooked, it might reduce the occurrence of smiling or laughing if a person is embarrassed about the condition of his or her teeth. The use of braces can enhance self esteem.
